Protecting hydraulic structures can prevent damage by beavers.

Sometimes beavers gnaw on wooden or plastic structures in order to change the water level or to create a passage for themselves (Figure 1). For example, there have been cases where hardwood or plastic weir boards were gnawed into a perfect U-shape. There are also reports of beavers gnawing on hardwood sluice gates. A solution could be to protect such structures by using metal boards, or, in the case of larger constructions, by covering the wood with metal plates.
